Will SCCCD Administrators Get A Raise? Be at the Next Board Meeting.

UPDATED 08/04/2020

Dear Fellow Members,

I know we’re all busy with Flex day and everything else that goes with a pandemic semester. Allow me to take a minute of your time, please, to update you on what happened at the Board of Trustees meeting.

Tuesday night at the Board of Trustees' meeting, our union, SCFT, scored an important win. Around 50 of our colleagues and fellow union members showed up to demand trustees sink any plans to improve the contract of the Chancellor.

Presumably knowing this would be a controversial move during a global health crisis and severe economic downturn, the Board put the item dead last on the agenda and failed to provide any real information about it prior to the meeting.

By the end of the night the Board had only resolved (in a 4-3 vote) to table the matter which, in so doing, casts new concerns about the possible financial windfall Chancellor Parnell could be in line to receive with the approval of his contract extension.

This all came after I made a direct appeal to the Chancellor to reject any contract extension as an expression of solidarity with SCCCD faculty, staff, students and our community.

Since the decision was taken it has been mired in even further controversy, with the Fresno Bee reporting that a split has emerged within upper admin as several were poised to refuse to sign the contracts.

Make sure you come along and forward the invite to your departmental colleagues so we can keep the pressure up and make sure money is spent where it's needed: in the classroom.

Fellow Members,

State Center Community College board members are set to discuss proposed contract extensions for administrators on Tuesday, August 4th. While it is the administrators who are up for contract extensions, we are asking you to hold the elected board members accountable should the proposed contract extensions be approved. Why is this a concern to the SCFT? In the recent past, the board has shown poor judgment in voting for a contract extension that was tied to a pay raise that bumped our Chancellor up 12% over the course of two years just after supporting a tuition increase for out-of-state students read more here. Whether or not the board will exercise better judgement this time, is highly questionable even with the surge of COVID-19 cases weighing heavily on the economy.

Earlier this month, Vice-Chancellor Sullivan painted a very bleak picture of the 2020-2021 academic year to the board of trustees. Her forecast of low enrollment, deficits, and economic fallout as a result of COVID 19 should not be taken as hyperbole. This is the future reality with which we are currently presented. In fact, we are already seeing these scenarios play out in our district: i.e, with low enrollment at some campuses in core departments such as English and Math, where classes are usually waitlisted at this time of the year. Yet, in the face of predicted drops in enrollment, deficits, and the economic fallout, the District is recommending contract extensions which could very well come with pay increases for administration.

There seems to be no disagreement that these are "unprecedented times"--the Trustees have made such comments themselves. Therefore, we hope that when the Trustees cast their vote on August 4, 2020, they will do so in good conscience, and vote against any contract tied to a raise, given that in our present circumstances this would be plainly improper. We, therefore, call on our membership, and the broader community to be present at the next board meeting on August 4th at 4:00 pm, to make sure the Trustees vote in a way that makes sense for our students, our faculty, and the community at large.
