Orange County March for Our Lives rally a huge success
This past weekend during the CFT Convention in Costa Mesa, hundreds of CFT delegates from across the state stood hand-in-hand with Orange County students at the 6,000-person March for Our Lives rally in Santa Ana. The Orange County event was part of the nationwide March for Our Lives day of action, when millions of people gathered at over 800 rallies to call for meaningful gun reform.
CFT was proud to support the student-led march and rally, where more than two-dozen students and educators shared their personal stories of how they have been impacted by gun violence and the students led the call for lawmakers to make students’ lives and safety a priority by passing common-sense gun safety legislation. The student leaders also invited Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom to speak at the rally. Having spearheaded the passage of Prop. 63 in 2016, which mandated background checks for ammunition purchases and banned large-capacity ammunition magazines, Newsom thanked the students and CFT for taking the lead in organizing the powerful event.
Check out this write up and slideshow of the rally in the OC Register, and take a look at some great pictures in our Facebook photo album.
Beyond the successful day of action, we will continue to support student leaders as they build a movement to make responsible gun reform a reality. Students are now calling for town halls across the country on April 7th. To find a town hall near you, or to organize your own town hall, go to townhallproject.com.
Next week look for a special online edition of the California Teacher for a full recap of the 2018 CFT Convention.
